Uncertain Times

I think Trump is acting increasingly unstable, paranoid, narcissistic, authoritarian, and in many ways like that of an out of control spoiled child. It makes me deeply concerned about what’s going on in the United States and what our future holds. And I know that millions and millions of people in this nation and around the world are feeling the same thing.
Look at what’s been going on. Trump got this nation into an unpopular war with Iran whose long-term outcome and ramifications are yet to be seen, and it seems like the reasons the Trump administration gives for why he got us into the war in the first place keep fluctuating. Frankly, I suspect Trump deluded himself into thinking that the war would be some quick easy victory, which is clearly far from the case. Numerous experts could have easily told him the Iranian government wasn’t going to just roll over and beg for mercy, especially since Iran knows the United States is not going to send large ground forces to invade the country. So the Iranian regime is hunkering down weathering US air attacks while blocking shipping out of the Straight of Hormuz and sending drone assaults against American forces and allies in the region. Seeing how these tactics hurt the economy of the United States as well as that of the world at large (with elevated gas prices), I suspect Iran is gambling that it can hold out until it gets a deal more to its liking. And I bet such a deal will not come anywhere close to stopping Iran’s nuclear program or its support of various militant groups in the region. Honestly, I think the national security of the Middle East and the United States is likely going to end up being much worse after this war is done as compared to what the situation was before the conflict was started.
We’re also seeing how Trump continues to insult our allies with grossly immature personal insults, like those being lobbed against Canada. In an apparent effort to disparage Canada, Trump made an executive order for the US federal government to call Lake Ontario Lake America. This is beyond childish. We’ve also seen how Trump has become ridiculously obsessed with Greenland despite the fact the United States already has a military presence there and that the territory is connected to Denmark, another close ally that’s also a fellow member of NATO. Plus, add on the fact that Greenlanders have made it crystal clear they do not want to be part of the United States. So frankly, this outrageous bullying of Greenland and Denmark is grossly undemocratic and dangerously imperialistic. And these are just a couple of examples of how Trump is alienating allies who have shown themselves to be good friends to this country in the past. The result is a United States that is becoming increasingly isolated which in turn hurts our economy as well as our national security.
Now, let’s take a look at the midterm elections which are coming up. Due to Trump’s low approval ratings, which are quite low indeed these days, he and other Republicans are worried that they’re going to take serious losses in the upcoming midterm elections. So they have blatantly and severely gerrymandered red states to the point where millions of Americans are going to find their votes essentially disenfranchised in numerous electoral races due to the fact that the districts have been rigged so severely, that Democrats will have no chance of winning even when more people are voting for Democrats in a region. It’s obvious that Republicans are trying to create a situation that even if more Americans vote for Democrats, Republicans would still hold control over the House of Representatives. That goes completely against what democracy is supposed to be about. And while it’s true that both parties have been guilty of gerrymandering in the past, we’ve never seen it done on such a blatantly undemocratic scale.
We’re also seeing how Trump is attacking mail-in voting in an effort try to limit the number of Americans who vote that way. And this completely ignores the fact that mail-in voting has been shown to be quite secure and effective. I think this obsession harks back to his 2020 Presidential election loss (an election Trump legitimately lost) and how these days, Democrats are more likely to vote by mail than Republicans. So Trump continues to make all sorts of outrageous false claims about mail-in voting as he tries to curtail it. And the situation’s made even more preposterous by the fact that he votes by mail himself! I also think it’s an effort by Trump and other Republicans to try to decrease the number of people who vote for Democrats as Republicans desperately try to cling to power.
So I think it’s quite clear that the behavior of Trump and numerous other Republicans is hurting our economy, undermining our democracy, and is making the world a much more dangerous place.
Now, what do we do about it? Everyone who is able needs to peacefully stand up and speak out in defense of our democracy. Demand politicians do what’s right instead of blindly following a narcissistic authoritarian wannabe. And we need to vote in overwhelming numbers so that we can defeat as many Republicans as possible in the upcoming as well as future elections. Because I think it is quite clear that the Republican Party as it is these days cannot be trusted.
