Well, Memorial Day has come once again; though, with the COVID pandemic, things are certainly different this year. People shouldn’t be having big, in person gatherings or the like. Too risky. Plus, the truth is that for years, many have lost sight of what this Holiday is supposed to be about as they got caught up with picnics, hotdogs, hamburgers, and laughter.
Memorial Day is to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for this country. And while that certainly includes soldiers, I would add anyone who has given their lives while defending democracy, helping others, and trying to make the world a better place. Soldiers, nurses, volunteers, first responders…
Like the soldiers cut down in their prime as they stormed the Normandy beaches in 1944 under withering fire from the bluffs above. Or a first responder killed while searching for victims inside a building being consumed by fire. Or a medical professional who delayed retirement to help in the COVID pandemic but fell prey to the virus themself.
So, take a moment to honor and thank (in your own way) those individuals who have given their lives while trying to make the world a better place.
