Here’s the deal folks: the Bisexual+ Community is hurting and struggling. Has been for years. And this needs to change!
For one thing, Bisexual+ is an umbrella term for anyone who has the potential to be attracted to more than one gender, whatever label(s) they prefer. Bisexual, Pansexual, Fluid, and so on all fit under this umbrella.
Another thing is that Bisexual and Pansexual are different terms and perhaps different ways of looking at the same idea. Bisexuality means the potential for attraction to more than one gender, any gender (Male, Female, Non-binary, Transgender, etc), while Pansexuality means attraction to someone regardless of gender. See what I mean. Different names and perhaps different ways of looking at the same thing. Many Bi+ use both terms for themselves.
Did you know that more people are Bi+ than Gay and Lesbian? Yep it’s true. But much of today’s society has a serious lack of understanding about Bisexual+ individuals. This often leads to insecurities, intolerances, and prejudices aimed at Bi+ persons. People often believe unfair preconceived stereotypes that are false the majority of the time. Thing is, the Bi+ Community is varied and diverse. While some are in ethically open or polyamorous relationships, most are monogamous and hoping to find someone special.
The Bi+ Community is NOT a bunch of confused, lying sex maniacs!
In media, Bi+ individuals and characters often have their identities erased or are treated badly as confused, lying villains. In the dating world, many people categorically refuse to date Bi+ individuals despite the fact that most would be totally faithful.
Everyone needs to recognize that the majority of Bi+ want to find that special someone. Sound familiar?!
That is why increased visibility of Bisexual+ people and education are so important. As Bisexuality/Pansexuality becomes more widely known, hopefully people will learn to open their minds and let go of unfair, negative stereotypes that are false most of the time.
